If a fire is not properly put out, it can be extremely dangerous. Every fire is different depending on how big it is, where it is, and how it was started. All of these elements should be taken into account before putting it out.

Grease fires

Unfortunately, grease fires are much more common than they should be. In a short amount of time, the fire will spread, causing damage to your home. Although our initial reaction is to throw a bucket of water over the mess, with a grease fire, this will only cause more problems. Taking a short second to think things through beforehand will actually save you in the end.

Assess the size of the fire before attempting to put it out. If you throw water on a grease fire, it will only cause the grease to spread, moving the grease farther from the initial point. If at all possible, put a lid on the pot where the fire has formed. By cutting off the oxygen to the fire, it will quickly die.

If the fire is not that well contained, use a fire extinguisher. You should always have one on hand for any situation. Before anything happens, be sure you know how to properly use the extinguisher. If this isn’t possible, call an emergency line for immediate help.

Other fires in the home

For other fires in the home, reaction time is important. Many people don’t realize that you can have your smoke detector hook back into an alarm company. Although this will cost you a monthly fee, if a fire does occur, it will save you greatly in the long run. Be sure to protect your home, but more importantly, protect yourself and those in the house.
