How To Protect Your Home From Wind Damage

Jun 30 2015

“The storm will pass” and “everything will blow over” are often said to calm anxiety about stressful times. But what happens when the storm blows over and takes your roof and walls with it?

Rapid Restoration is here to tell you! Let’s talk about wind, it’s powerful and is responsible for thousands of dollars worth of damage every year. And while you can’t prevent natural disasters from striking, you can take preventative measures to give your roof and walls a fighting chance against severe rain, wind, and hail.

Weather is Unpredictable:

Though the weather channel can tell you when to expect a storm, that’s about it. Wind speeds and direction can change suddenly, rainfall can intensify and hail can get to be the size of golf balls (or larger). Pressure is exerted on structures and if there are any points of weakness, they may fail and cause damage to the rest of the structure..

Not surprisingly, the roof, siding panels, doors and windows are all potential points of weakness, as they provide entry into the structure. Simple steps and routine maintenance can be the difference between watching the rain fall outside your window, and hosting the storm in what used to be your living room.

Here are some Best Practice Tips to help you be better protected.

Roof Protection:

The roof of your home sustains the force of wind and weather every day, and if it isn’t stable it can damage the walls and other parts of the structure.

It consists of several parts, the sheathing is the base layer connected to your rafters, the shingles which are visible on the outside and the gables, which are the side walls if your roof is pitched.

The points where the roof connects to your house need to be stronger than wind that is pushing it against it.

Check the inside of your attic to make sure that the sheathing is properly anchored to your rafters.

Consider investing in impact resistant asphalt shingles to prevent damage from large hail and heavy rain.

Protecting Your Doors & Windows:

Doors and windows are weaker by default, they are made to provide a portal between the inside and outside of the structure. Unfortunately, they can be and often are the most direct route for wind and debris to make their ways into their your home and potentially damage your things.

Look into installing wind shutters on your windows or on large glass doors to prevent breakage during a severe storm.
