Discovering mold in your home can be horrifying. You’re wondering how it got there and if it’s harmful to your family’s health, right? We’re no stranger to homeowners feeling this way, which is why we work so hard to take care of this nasty problem and ensure it never comes back.

What about you though? Can you DIY this type of thing? Believe it or not, there are a few methods you can take to get rid of mold in your home, but be aware that the best answer is to always call a mold remediation specialist to make sure the job is done right. For those minor growths that you find, here are the steps you can follow to handle them.

1. Get Rid of Moisture

Most mold growths thrive in dark, moist locations, so you should check your home regularly for leaks or areas that fit this description. You can do this with fans or basic rags to wipe up any standing liquid. Do any necessary repairs to make sure the water doesn’t come back.

2. Use a Cleaning Solution

You can use a specialized mold remover , or you can choose a more natural cleaning solution to remove minor cases. Like any major cleaning project, you should first put on a pair of rubber gloves, a respirator mask, and safety goggles if possible. Some of these solutions can irritate the skin, and cleaning mold can release spores that are harmful to breathe in.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a non-toxic and safe solution to kill mold. It works effectively on porous and non-porous surfaces, but you should always test it in a small area to make sure it doesn’t stain what you’re trying to clean. Here’s how you can use it to remove mold:

Put 3% concentration hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle.
Spray the moldy surface and let it sit for 10 minutes.
Scrub down the surface and rinse off the hydrogen peroxide.
Spray a solution of borax or white vinegar to prevent it from coming back.

White Vinegar

Vinegar is also a natural way to remove and stop future mold growth. While it may have strong fumes, the fumes are non-toxic. With proper ventilation, the fumes should go away after a little time. with proper ventilation, depending on the surface you’re washing, you might not even need to rinse it off after you’re done!

Put white distilled vinegar into a spray bottle.
Spray the moldy surface liberally.
Let the vinegar stay on the surface for at least an hour.
Scrub the surface with a scrubbing brush or scouring pad and wipe it off with warm water.
Spray vinegar on the surface again and let it air dry.

Borax

While borax is toxic when consumed, it naturally kills and prevents further mold growth. Unlike bleach, it doesn’t emit toxic fumes and it can kill mold on porous surfaces. In fact, borax can also be used as an insecticide , as well. Here’s how you can use borax effectively:

Mix a ratio of 1 cup powdered borax with 1 gallon warm water.
Spray or wipe the borax solution on the moldy surface.
Let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.
Scrub and wipe the surface off. You don’t need to wash off the borax, as borax is a natural deterrent.

Do Not Use Bleach

As much as bleach may be an effective cleaning agent, it shouldn’t be used to remove mold. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t recommend it. Using bleach can cause toxic fumes that can harm your respiratory system. Plus, bleach doesn’t soak into porous substances, so even if you use bleach to remove it, there could be spores lurking down below.

3. Watch for Further Growth

Doing DIY methods to get rid of mold growths can successfully keep it away, but more often than not, it will come back. Porous surfaces, including carpet, drywall, or wood could have hidden spores lurking in them, so it’s important to keep checking for it to come back. If it does come back, you may want to hire a professional to get rid of the source.

How to Prevent Mold Growth

If you’ve successfully gotten rid of the mold growing in your home or want some tips to make sure it doesn’t grow in the first place, there are quite a few ways you can prevent it. The first thing you should remember is that it thrives in moisture. No water, no mold. Here are a few ways to keep moisture levels down in your home.

Use a Dehumidifier

If your home is consistently humid, your home could benefit from a dehumidifier. It will remove the excess water in the air and make it harder for mold to grow.

Seal any Cracks in Windows and Doors

You can purchase a crack sealant at any hardware store. By tightening up those small entryways you will prevent a lot of spores from coming in as they travel on the air.

Rake and Clear Fallen Leaves

Mold easily grows on wet leaves. If you have any near your home, make sure you clear them out. Additionally, don’t let anyone track anything wet in your home on their shoes.

Check Your Basement and Attic for Leaks

What to Do When You Find Mold During Remodeling?

We tend to remodel our homes when things start to go into disrepair or the style becomes outdated. As you rip up old flooring, remove drywall, or take anything old out to make room for the new, you might find mold. Mold grows in moist places. If your home has been exposed to any leaks, too much humidity, or neglect, then there’s a higher possibility of finding mold.

So what exactly should you do if you find mold during remodeling? Obviously you’re not going to be able to just leave it. You’re going to need to take action.

5 Steps to Tackling Mold During a Remodel

1. Don’t Ignore It

You may be tempted to paint over a moldy wall or cover it up in some other way. Truth is this won’t take care of your issue. The mold will still be there and might even get worse. Our blog post, “ Why you shouldn’t wait to take care of your mold ” highlights the dangers of mold. It talks about three different classifications of mold: allergenic, pathogenic, and toxigenic. A little bit of mold may not be too dangerous, but certain types of mold can actually lead to respiratory issues, immune disorders, and even life-threatening issues. 2. Analyze the Situation

To analyze your mold situation, ask yourself two questions:

How much mold is there?
What color is the mold?

Are there huge (face-size or bigger) spots of mold? This is mold that has probably been there for a while. Handling it yourself may be consequential. It would be wise to seek mold remediation services .

If you have a lot of mold, is it black? Although mold often appears darker and different types of mold may appear black, you need to be cautious of black mold. After all, black mold can cause the following symptoms:

Coughing
Sneezing
Runny or stuffy nose
Sore throat
Dizziness
Headaches

Should you choose to clean black mold yourself , you can use borax, vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide. Keep children and pets away as well as make sure you’re wearing the proper gear. If you have any respiratory issues or other ailments, always seek professional assistance.

3. Wear Protective Gear & Have the Proper Equipment

While cleaning up mold, you’re going to want to wear old clothes. After being used, these clothes will either need to be washed really well or thrown out entirely. You’ll also need to make sure you have the following equipment on hand:

N-95 or P-100 respirators
Goggles
Gloves
An old box fan or a cheap new one (expect to throw this away later).
6-mil plastic
Large plastic bags
Tape (duck tape and blue tape)
A garden sprayer
Vacuum with extra long hose
A bucket with bleach, detergent, and water
Scrubbing appliances
Dehumidifier and a new fan
Shellac

4. Set Up Your Workspace

While wearing protective gear, set up your workspace so that you are safe and making sure that the mold doesn’t spread. Set the box fan in the window . This will help ventilate the room while you work. The fan will collect mold spores, and these are near impossible to get rid of. Because of this, you don’t want to keep the fan. Throw it out!

Before turning on the fan, tape cardboard around the window openings. This will prevent the mold spores from coming back into your home. You’ll also need to wrap any carpet you tear out in 6-mil plastic. Then, double-bag it with large trash bags and tape it to ensure that it is completely closed off before disposal.

While you work, it is likely that there will be mold spores that will become airborne. To control this issue, take the garden sprayer and moisten the moldy areas. This may seem controversial, but this will trap the spores so they don’t go in the air and possibly make scrubbing away the mold easier. To further help control this airborne issue, turn off your HVAC system and cover ducts and doors.

As for the vacuum and extra long hose, you’ll want to have the vacuum running outside while you clean up on the inside. This will help make sure that mold spores don’t just end up back in your house. Don’t use the super nice vacuum you got for Christmas, because you will want to throw this vacuum out after using it to clean up mold. Get a cheap 2-part vacuum with a canister (part where the debris runs and air sucks into) and handle. The canister is the part that will be kept outside while you work on the inside of your home with the handle. Some rental companies may have this type available for you to use for this purpose.

5. Remove & Prevent Future Mold

Mix half a cup of bleach, one quart of water, and a little detergent into a bucket of water. For your safety, make sure that the detergent doesn’t contain any trace of ammonia in its ingredients. Then, start scrubbing away. Make sure that all used cleaning supplies are double bagged and taped up before being thrown away.

Once you’ve removed the mold, set up dehumidifiers and new fans (not the same one you had in the window before). You’ll want to have these running for three days to ensure that everything is dried completely. Once everything is dry and you can see that there is no more mold, you may want to consider sealing off the area. If the mold was on a wood surface, you’ll also want to seal it off with shellac to help prevent further mold growth in the area.

Finally, you can move on with your remodeling project.

We’ve heard the question many times, “How can I know which type of mold is growing in my house?” Often, we’ll ask a few questions to help the individual identify which type of mold they have. We’ve found that one of the biggest indicators is the color. See, mold comes in a variety of colors and only a few types of mold can be found in the same color. As you read through this post, you’ll be able to identify the types of mold that normally go into your mold color’s category.

What Color is Your Mold?

Take a good look at the mold growing in your house. Be cautious, and don’t touch it without wearing gloves and a face mask. You can use a toothpick or disposable plastic knife to scratch at the mold’s surface to see if the mold has any multi-color layers.

As we discuss the different types of molds associated with the various colors, you’ll need to know the three categories of mold :

Allergenic: causes and produces allergies, which can lead to allergic reactions and asthma-like symptoms.

Pathogenic: leads to infections in humans and comes from fungus that grows in or on human tissue.

Toxigenic: causes infections, neurological impairment, and deathly health conditions.

The Mold Color Categories

1. Black

You’ve probably heard of the infamous and deathly “Black Mold”, and you probably assume that all black-colored mold is super dangerous. Yet, not all black-colored mold is THE “Black Mold”. In fact, there are three types of mold that you may find that are black in color:

Aureobasidium: This type of mold is an allergenic mold that can lead to eye, skin, or nail infections after touching it. It can also be found in two other colors: pink and brown.

Ulocladium: This is a pathogenic mold that can lead to hay fever, difficulty breathing, and skin infections.

Stachybotrys OR Black Mold: This is a toxigenic mold and is usually slimy in texture. It can lead to persistent coughing and even neurological issues for children. It can also be found in one other color: dark green.

Because Stachybotrys is a high risk mold type and even Ulocladium can be as well, it’s better to err on the side of caution. Use a professional mold removal service instead of attempting to clean up the mold yourself.

2. Green

Green is a very popular color when it comes to mold. However, it’s very important to pay attention to the various shades of green. Within the category of green, there are four subcategory colors:

Dark Green
Olive Green
Green
Green with White Specs

So what do these different shades of green mean?

Dark Green

For this variant of green, you’re going to most likely come across two different types of mold.

Alternaria: This mold type has a velvety texture and is considered to be an allergenic mold that can lead to asthma-like symptoms. It can also be found in one other color: brown.

Stachybotrys OR Black Mold: As mentioned above, Black Mold is a very dangerous mold. It can be life-threatening, especially if your immune system is compromised.

The biggest visual difference between Alternaria and Black Mold is texture. Alternaria is velvety and Black Mold is slimy. If you feel confident that your mold is Alternaria, you should be able to take care of it with mold cleaner. If you are unsure or are positive that your mold is indeed Black Mold, leave the cleanup to the professionals.

Olive Green

If your mold is olive green in color, then there is one type of mold associated with it:

Cladosporium: This is an allergenic mold that can irritate your skin and lungs. It can also be found in one other color: brown.

Although Cladosporium may be easily cleaned with a bleach solution, some people may find it hard to determine whether or not their mold is truly dark green (a sign of Black Mold) or olive green. If you’re unsure of the exact color of your mold, please seek mold remediation services .

Green

If your mold is just plain green in color, then it will most likely be

Penicillin: This allergenic mold has a velvety texture and can be particularly harmful to individuals with immune disorders. It also comes in one other color: blue.

If you have asthma, an immune disorder, and an allergy to penicillin, you should not handle the cleanup of the mold on your own.

Green with White Specs

Does your green mold have any white specs in it? If so, that’s a clear indicator that it is

Trichoderma: This type is primarily an allergenic mold, but it can also be a pathogenic mold in certain situations. At its pathogenic level, it can lead to liver infections. Because of that risk, it would be best to let a mold cleanup professional take care of it.

3. Brown

Although brown may seem like a scary color, it’s typically a sign of three different allergenic mold types that we’ve already discussed above:

Aureobasidium: Touching this mold can lead to infections, so always make sure you’re wearing gloves when removing brown mold. It is also found in black and pink colors.

Alternaria: This mold can cause asthma-like symptoms, so be careful to not breathe it in. Wear a face mask with air filters when removing brown mold. Alternaria can also be found in dark green.

Cladosporium: Coming into contact with this mold can cause irritation and even lead to rashes or lesions. To stay safe, always wear long sleeves and full-length pants when cleaning up after brown mold.

If you’ve observed the mold over time and have seen it change from white to gray and then brown, then it’s definitely not allergenic. It’s most likely

Chaetomium: This pathogenic mold is common in water-damaged homes and can lead to nail or skin infections.

4. Pink

Pink may seem like a pretty color, but don’t let the color fool you. Pink mold is nothing to ooh and ahh about. There are three types of mold associated with this color:

Aureobasidium: This allergenic mold type can also be found in black or brown, which we’ve discussed above. Just be weary of not letting the mold come into contact with your eyes, skins, or nails.

Acremonium: This toxigenic mold is what makes the idea of pink mold scary. It has been known to cause bone marrow diseases, severely compromised immune systems, and brain function impairment. This type of mold can also be found in white, gray, and orange

Fusarium: This type of mold can be either an allergenic or a toxigenic mold. At its toxigenic level, it can lead to bone infections and brain abscess. Fusarium can also be found in red and white. Due to that risk, it should always be treated as such and treated professionally.

Toxigenic molds should be left to the professionals to take care of as they have equipment and training that won’t exasperate any health risks. Although pink mold isn’t always a toxigenic mold, it should be treated as such just in case.

5. Red

You may already see the color red and think that it’s a huge warning sign. When it comes to mold, you’re absolutely right. Red mold is typically

Fusarium: As mentioned in the last section, this type of mold is incredibly dangerous and can be harmful to your bones and brain if it has been allowed to fester from its allergenic stage to a toxigenic stage. You may not be able to tell whether or not it is toxigenic, and so make sure to get it professionally treated.

6. White

There are three main different types of white mold:

Fusarium: This mold can either be found as an allergenic or a toxigenic. As discussed above, exposure can lead to life-threatening conditions. It can also be found in pink and red colors.

Acremonium: Like Fusarium, this toxigenic mold type can be destructive for your bones and brain health. You’re also likely to find it in pink, orange, and gray.

Mucor: This is an allergenic mold, and you’re most likely to find it around your HVAC system or related parts. Because it latches onto your air ventilation system, it is very likely that you’ll breathe in this mold. Thus, exposure can lead to respiratory issues. Mucor can also be found in a gray form.

Some white mold may also eventually change into a gray-ish color. This type is called Chaetomium, a pathogenic mold. It will go from white to gray to brown. Due to the high chance of white mold being either pathogenic or toxigenic, it would be best for you to let a mold removal specialist take care of your white mold issue.

7. Gray

Gray mold can be found in all three mold categories: allergenic, pathogenic, and toxigenic.

Mucor: As discussed in the last section, this allergenic mold can lead to respiratory issues if breathed in. It’s also found in white.

Chaetomium: If your mold was once white and has become gray, you have this type of mold. It’s a pathogenic mold that can lead to infections. If not taken care of, it can turn brown.

Acremonium: This toxigenic mold is very destructive, negatively impacting bone and brain health. It can be found in pink, white, and orange colors.

8. Blue

There is only one blue mold, and so it’s easy to identify this type of mold as

Remove the oil from the heat and turn off the stove. If you were unable to prevent the fire from starting, here’s what you should do to put it out. No matter what, DO NOT put water on the fire, as it will only make the fire spread.

Smother the fire with a pan lid. Slide the lid over the flames rather than coming from the top. Use a metal lid instead of a glass lid, as the glass will most likely shatter if used.
Smother the pan with a wet rag or towel. If you don’t have a pan lid nearby, you can use a wet rag or towel to smother the fire. If you choose this method, make sure your rag is damp, not soaking wet, and also make sure the cloth is thick enough so it won’t catch on fire too.
Turn off the burner and let the pan cool naturally. Once the flame is smothered, move the pan off the source of heat, if possible. Don’t try to rush the hot pan outside to let it cool off as you risk splashing hot oil on yourself and spreading or starting the fire.

Throw plenty of salt or baking soda on the fire. DO NOT throw flour, baking powder, or any other common baking ingredients on the fire.

What’s the Difference Between Their Standard Policies

What Is the Most Common Insurance Policy?

While each insurance company is different, the most common homeowner’s insurance policy is the HO-3. The HO-3 policy covers most basic damages to your home, including water damage, fire and smoke damage, and storm damage. This coverage plan covers your home’s structure, your personal belongings and liability in the event of damage or injury. Typically, an HO-3 policy will also cover additional living expenses and protection for other structures on your property

What Does the HO-3 Policy Cover?

Generally, this coverage can include your heating and cooling systems, along with kitchen appliances, furniture, clothing, and other possessions. Coverage for other buildings on your property, such as a garage, barn, or shed, along with outdoor grills or fireplaces, swing sets, walls, or fences is also included. A swimming pool or other recreational equipment may also be covered, but those higher-risk items may require additional coverage.

Water Damage

Water damage because of weather or in-home appliances are often covered by the HO-3 policy. It can help cover water damage if the cause is sudden and accidental. This means your insurance covers water damage caused by:

Burst pipes
Broken water heater or water softener
Leaky HVAC system
Leaky roof from heavy rains

What Water Damage Isn’t Covered?

The HO-3 policy won’t cover the cost of repairs if your home was damaged by:

Flooding of rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water: Flood insurance is a separate policy. In fact, many areas in Minnesota require homeowners to purchase flood insurance if they live on a floodplain.
Something you could have prevented: For example, if you already had a hole in your roof before it started to rain and your home was damaged by the rain, your insurance company would label it as something you could have prevented.
Water backup from an outside sewer or drain: Typically, this policy won’t cover outside sewer leakage, but you are able to purchase additional sewer coverage that may help cover damage in that event.

Mold Damage

Mold is often not covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy unless the mold was caused by water damage from sources listed above. If mold grows in your house and it’s something you could have prevented, your insurance company won’t cover it.

Imagine that your basement floods. If mold grows because of the flooded basement it’s covered under the water damage portion of your policy. However, mold growing in your bathroom because it was insufficiently cleaned isn’t covered.

Fire and Smoke Damage

As long as the fire wasn’t something you could have easily prevented, fire and smoke damage are covered by your policy. Even if your home only sustains smoke damage, and no fire damage,, homeowners insurance will generally cover repair or replacement as needed.This means that your home is covered if your home is damaged by:

Grease fires
Wildfires
Fire pits
Electrical fires

If a fire burns down your home, insurance would most likely pay for items like damaged furniture, clothing, and other personal property.

What Fire Damage Isn’t Covered?

Your home isn’t covered when damaged by arson. Because arson is a criminal act, an insurance company has the discretion to withhold coverage. This regulation deters abusive homeowners from setting their homes on fire purposefully. In fact, deliberately setting your home on fire to file a claim on your insurance policy is known as arson insurance fraud. Your insurance company will investigate the fire, and if they determine arson was the cause the damage won’t be covered.

Fire damage while your home is vacant isn’t covered either. Insurance companies consider a home vacant if it hasn’t been occupied for over 30 days. However, there is a separate policy available that covers vacant homes if you’re planning on staying away from your home for extended periods of time.

Storm Damage

Your home is covered in most instances if damaged by a storm. Some of these include:

Lightning
Windstorm
Hail
Fallen objects
Water Damage

That means your home is covered in the case of a tornado and a fallen tree, too. However, what’s covered and what isn’t can be tricky when it comes to storm damage. For example, if a river floods your home after heavy rains your home insurance won’t cover it, as it counts as flood damage. A roof leak caused by heavy rains should be covered, however!

What Storm Damage Isn’t Covered?

The most common things not covered by the HO-3 policy are :

Floods
Earthquakes
Landslides, mudslides, and sinkholes
Preventable damage
Sewer backup

While they aren’t covered in the main policy, you can add on extra perils, such as flood insurance or earthquake insurance to your policy. Determining what you need can be as simple as figuring out what natural disasters your home is at risk of.

Is a Home Remodel Covered By My Insurance Policy?

If your home has been damaged by something covered by your insurance policy, your insurance company will pay a determined cost to get your home back to how it was. While you can choose to remodel your home after it’s been damaged, the cost of both restoring and remodeling won’t be covered.
